Local Author Heather Boschke Celebrated as a Finalist at the Midwest Book Awards for Children’s Book, "Little Birdie Buddies of Minnesota"

Minneapolis, MN — May 2, 2024 — Local Minnesota artist and author Heather Boschke is honored to announce her selection as a finalist in the nonfiction children's & young adult category of the prestigious Midwest Book Awards for her children’s book, "Little Birdie Buddies of Minnesota."

Inspired by the nickname of “Heather Feather,” that her Grandfather gave her, Boschke’s love for birds transformed into a creative outlet during the Covid-19 lockdown. This journey culminated in the creation of the Little Birdie Buddies series, which debuted with "Little Birdie Buddies of Minnesota". The book artfully intertwines her whimsical illustrations with captivating educational narratives spotlighting 20 distinct bird species, making nature's wonders accessible and engaging for children.

“This nomination is incredibly meaningful to me. It celebrates my journey from sketching birds as a creative outlet to sharing these creations with children and families. Each bird in the book carries a message of uniqueness and beauty, reflecting the qualities I see in every human." Says Boschke. “My purpose is to spread joy one bird at a time.”

"Little Birdie Buddies of Minnesota" is more than just a bird book; it is a gateway for young readers to discover the beauty of nature and recognize their own unique traits mirrored in the personalities of each bird featured. This book aims to foster a connection with the natural world, inspire curiosity, and promote self-esteem among children of all ages.

The Midwest Book Awards, organized by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association since 1989, continues to support and recognize the excellence of independent publishing in the region. Boschke’s work was evaluated by a panel of experts, including booksellers, university staff, and librarians across the twelve states represented by MiPA.

Winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony at the Mall of America in Minneapolis on June 22, 2024. More information about the event and other finalists can be found at mipa.org/midwest-book-awards/2024-finalists/
